Anatomy of a fold

  • HingeLine of maximum curvature along the fold; where the axial plane intersects the folded surface.
  • LimbThe flank of a fold between two hinges, typically the most planar part.
  • Axial planeThe surface that divides a fold as symmetrically as possible, connecting hinge lines through the stack of folded layers.
  • VergenceThe direction a fold appears to lean or verge, used to infer the location of a larger structure like a fold nose or thrust front.
  • Inflection pointWhere the folded surface crosses its own regional trend line, marking the boundary between one limb and the next.
